Snowmageddon Bomb Cyclone Polar Vortex

Snow

Some flurries are coming down in Dover, Delaware right now.  It isn’t as cold as it’s been, but that is coming again on Saturday when a polar vortex (love that name) brings temperatures into the low teens and possibly single digits.  I just got back from Trivia Night at Frazier’s Restaurant in Dover.  My team came in 6th place out of 11 teams.  Some questions were easy, like what number is Star Wars: A New Hope in the series.  Or who played Max in the Mad Max movies (and not the one that came out a few years ago).  But  my team stumbled on the big scoring questions.  Like who was Canadian or American out of these choices: The Weekend, Adam Levine, Kesha, and Shawn Mendes or which places went from highest to lowest in population: New Hampshire, New Brunswick, and New Caledonia.  But I always have a good time when I go whether my team wins or loses.

My son’s school district, Capital, already has a two-hour delay.  I read somewhere tonight Milford is already closed.  I’m pretty sure Capital will close but I won’t get the call until 6:30am tomorrow according to the robo-call from Superintendent Dan Shelton.  Luckily my house has gas in case the power goes out.  I have plenty of candles.  And snacks in case I can’t cook.  And books.  I have tons of books!  Now I’m going to watch the Season 11 première of the X-Files.  Glad I set up the DVR before heading out to Trivia Night!

Just a random post here.  No big education scoop.  Just thinking out loud.  Be safe if you should happen to drive tomorrow.  And stay warm!  Oh, and one more thing, get your car battery checked.  Mine died last week in the polar vortex of 2017.  Glad I was able to get a new one ahead of the next one.  Cause baby, it’s gonna be cold outside!

Enrollment Preference Task Force Meeting Canceled Tomorrow Night

Charter School Enrollment Preference

Just in case anyone was getting really excited to see the “choice” activists vs. the public school district advocates, I wanted to let you know due to the polar vortex tainted snowmageddon the meeting is canceled.  There is a tentative meeting for March 10th (Smarter Balanced Day in Delaware, have you opted your child out yet?).  No word yet if Alex Medler from the National Association of Charter School Authorizers will be able to attend.  Mark it on your calendar and try to come.  It’s free, it’s cozy, and you can give public comment!

Red Clay Priority School Plans Approved By Board & Other Priority School Tidbits

Delaware Priority Schools Takeover

It looks like the Red Clay Consolidated School Board has passed the priority school plans each school drafted for the Delaware Department of Education’s priority schools initiative.  Next stop, the DOE.  And due to the snowmageddon that never happened, Christina postponed their board meeting to vote on the plans until February 3rd, a week from tonight.  All of this will further postpone any decision by the DOE and Governor Markell on the priority schools until early February at the earliest.  Meanwhile, the Wilmington Education Committee recommendations for Wilmington schools will be heard tomorrow in a Joint House and Senate Education Committee meeting tomorrow at Legislative Hall in Dover at 3pm.
