As Governor Carney And School Districts Play The “Are We Closing” Tug Of War, Students And Families Are At Risk More Every Single Day

It was widely expected parents in Delaware would hear something about school closings today.  It is now after most schools have gotten out for the day and nothing.  But what is going on behind the scenes is even more confusing.  Delaware Governor John Carney is playing a game with the school districts and they are not happy about it.

School districts want the Governor to make an announcement closing all the schools in the state.  Governor John Carney wants it to be a local decision.  While this cat and mouse game goes on, the chances become greater every single day that Coronavirus will become more widespread in Delaware.  The Governor can say that schools are different.  He is right.  You have well over 100,000 children bringing everything from the outside world into one building.  If we have learned anything about the Coronavirus it is that people can be walking around with it and not even know it.  They could feel totally fine as the incubation period can be anywhere from two to possibly six weeks.  Our schools, no matter how much they clean them, are becoming the biggest Petri dishes in the state.  Why do you think every single major university and college in the state is closed now?  While younger people have not been as sick as older people, we know they can carry the virus.

Just do the right thing Governor Carney.  Make the tough call that the people of Delaware elected you to do.  We all know it is coming.  Rip the band-aid off.  Every single moment you delay you are risking the lives of Delaware citizens.  Don’t let this be the moment Delaware remembers you for.

  1. I just brought my oldest home from college for a spring break that is now, suddenly, a move out time, instead. If UD thinks that it should close the dorms – with students suddenly having to find homes, transportation, storage, etc., it must be serious enough for the K12 schools to close. I am very angry that my youngest children will be forced to continue going to school – in a city that already has 4 known cases – probably endangering their health, my health, their grandparents’ health, and their great-grandparents’ health, as well as anyone else that they come in contact with. Send them home. Hopefully, they can come back in a bit. Since I have a senior, I certainly want to hear what they do about the prom (do I buy a dress or not…) and graduation – something that they have worked a very long time to get to.

  2. My son goes to polytech and they had to close early because someone came to visit the school and they tested positive. So you put my child and every other child in harms way when you didn’t close the schools. All schools should be closed in Delaware. # not a happy mother
