Chapman Vs. Sokola On Education!!!! Must-See Event!

Chapman Vs. Sokola

It looks like Meredith Chapman will have a chance to debate Senator David Sokola on education!  The Friends Of Christina are holding a forum where both will talk about their education platforms on October 27th, from 7:00 to 8:15pm.  I really can’t miss this one!

Please MARK YOUR CALENDARS for an important fall event!

FOCSD will host an education forum for Newark-area state senate candidates on THURS., Oct 27, 7:00-8:15 at Kirk Middle School.

Incumbent Dave Sokola (chair, DE Senate education committee) and challenger Meredith Chapman will speak to us about their education platforms and take questions from participants. Do you have questions, concerns, or ideas you would like to raise with the people campaigning to shape state education policies over the next several years? This is your chance to let Mr. Sokola and Ms. Chapman know what concerns families invested in our schools.

There’s no better time to bend the ear of elected & aspiring public officials than the weeks just before they are up for election!

In Honor Of Delaware Met

Delaware MET

A year ago today, I received an anonymous email indicating Delaware Met was closing.  The Wilmington charter school opened a month before and it was a disaster from the first day.  While the school didn’t voluntarily close, it was on the drawing table that weekend.  After confirming this information with a couple other people, I posted the story.  Shock followed shock as the public found out everything about the school.  The fights, the bullying, the special education problems, the teacher problems, the board problems, and so on.  For the first time, since “David Morgan” never got back in touch with me, I am releasing the email I received that day.

I didn’t think David Morgan would respond, but he did.

It would be about a month and a half until I heard from David Morgan again.  By that time, Delaware MET was well into formal review.  I googled the hell out of the name David Morgan but I couldn’t find any trace of this person anywhere in Delaware.  Does anyone want to see more Dave Morgan emails?  I’ve tried to reach “Dave” since our last communication in early 2016, but there has been zero response.  Let me know!

From Neighborhood Schools to Learning Eco-Systems, A Dangerous Trade

Wrench in the Gears

If we hope to preserve neighborhood schools for future generations we must recognize how reformers are reframing the idea of public education in dangerous new ways. A coordinated campaign of ALEC legislation, philanthropic investments, and slick re-branding is underway with the ultimate goal of replacing school buildings and certified, human teachers with decentralized, unregulated learning eco-systems and non-credentialed mentors and/or AI “tutors.”

It is a challenging concept to grasp. Therefore, I have decided to work on a series of posts. Taken together, I hope they will provide a base of information that people can share with others. This initial post will provide a framework for understanding the concept of a learning eco-system. Subsequent ones will cover: school redesign, digital badging, credit-bearing ELOs, Social Impact Bond financing, and changes to teacher training/hiring.

What is a learning eco-system?
