What is “The Delaware Way”?

This is a question I have pondered for quite some time, though more intentionally lately than in the past. I finally broke down and typed the question into Google, and I read through several bits and pieces of articles where that phrase was used. Fascinatingly, the best, most concise definition I found was in a Delaware Online article from 2014, wherein former Delaware Supreme Court Chief E. Norman Veasey explained that the phrase should mean, “the good Delaware practice of seeking a “civilized, bipartisan approach for finding solutions to the State’s business and political problems”.”

What fascinated me about that was, earlier in the same paragraph, Veasey acknowledged that the phrase is more commonly used to describe Delaware’s “pay-to-play” type of political maneuvering, wherein gifts are given in exchange for legislative action…or inaction. In yet another 2014 Delaware Online article, former DNREC head Collin…

I am a proud parent of a son with Tourette's Syndrome and several other co-morbidities. I write on this blog to educate other parents so they know a bit more about not only special education, but all the really bad things that are happening with public schools in Delaware and the USA. We are all in this together, and if our children aren't able to advocate for themselves it's up to us parents! We need to stop letting companies run our schools, and demand our children get a proper education. Our Departments of Education in our states have become weak with fear from the bullying US DOE, and we need to take back our schools!

  1. I dislike the phase “the Delaware way”, while I believe there can be truth in the sentiment, often it’s used in an ambiguous matter, which is more about sharing frustration than understanding. It’s a verbal white flag of defeat. It’s a phrase that said why try to change anything, because your best efforts are worthless.

This phase is a LIE! We do live in a world where your actions and attitudes matter. Delaware has and will change in the future. What role do you want to play in that future?

  2. Being from Delaware it is a statement of frustration for sure. Yes “pay to play” and “same old way for no good reason” are terms you can substitute. I like to describe it this way: “You know the saying Think outside the box? Delaware is the box.” You have lifers that refuse to change the way things are done. I see it every day at every meeting, training, political gathering of any kind. Delaware is changing? Not really – they just want you to think it is. Then they fight to the death to hold onto defunct programs and policies. Don’t believe me? Why isn’t the state fully electronic? Why was I trained 16 years ago on technology Delaware has yet to implement? Trust me the Delaware Way is here to stay. The only difference? The faces change but the policies stay the same. The few amazing people that are doing so many good things could eventually get beat down by this and possibly give up. I wish it was different and despite feeling this way I am still speaking up and trying to change my little part of the state. I think that if everyone did that much it could change. We just have to get to the point were “we” outnumber “them.”
