Red Clay’s Skyline Middle School Parents Want Change In School Climate, Release Youtube Video

At the Red Clay Consolidated School District Board of Education meeting on Wednesday night, several parents of students who attend Skyline Middle School spoke before the board about school climate.  The school has several new students from the City of Wilmington attending the school and parents are very concerned about the 500% increase in suspension rates and a rapid increase in bullying.  Sounds like Skyline needs to be looked at as well as The Delaware Met.  I’m glad the board at Red Clay is taking quick and decisive action on this, but these things just shouldn’t happen under any circumstances.

I just posted the following on Facebook:

The bullying has got to stop. No more excuses. Schools need to be a safe haven for ALL students. Matt Denn, please look into this in ALL Delaware schools. We need to make sure special education is being implemented and done right. We also need to put an end to violence being inflicted on students. No child should ever come home crying and tell his parents he is too scared to go to school. No parent should ever have to stand before a school board and demand change. It just shouldn’t happen.

  1. Matt Denn….Do your job! Lock these fucking asshole kids up! Society cannot move forward coddling these fucking asshole bullies! This school sounds worse than Eastside, FFA, or Delaware MET.

If one of my grandchildren gets knocked unconscious, fuck the school’s lack of discipline system, I will personally press charges and have someone locked up. Spec ed or not….Being a fucking asshole is not a disability!

  2. It sounds like there’s definitely some real issues here that need to be addressed. Bullying is never ok in any form. And students who aren’t even fighting getting injured by nearby fights is also not ok.

That being said, I would love to hear more information about this issue and exactly what the parents want to change. I totally get the worries about student safety, but there was a dangerous undertone in some statements of “I moved here for this school, or I loved this school before, and now the kids from the city are ruining it.” I heard some good suggestions on how the board could help support, but I also heard threats of parents leaving. I would have liked to hear some suggestions of programs that all students could participate in to help them bond, or suggestions on how to support the influx of new students beyond just hiring another SRO.

It is hard to tell how much of this is valid concern (and certainly a good portion of it is) and how much is NIMBY. At times it reminded me of the recent This American Life episode that aired portions of a recorded meeting – and not in a good way. In all honesty, purposely including the comment at the end about Conrad’s mascot is part of what made me question the motives of this video; that was purposely edited in, it’s not like this was a live tape, and that is a whole separate issue that should not be lumped in with this.

Regardless, student safety should be a top concern and I hope the district does look into more ways to support teachers and admins. But, I also hope they look into ways to support all students, including those who are new to the school/feeder pattern and who are getting caught up in these changes, which was not a population we got to hear from in this setting.
