Governor Jack Markell’s House Bill 50 Veto Message

Governor Markell, House BIll 50 Veto, Parent Opt-Out of the Smarter Balanced Assessment

The following is Delaware Governor Jack Markell’s no respect and no honor for Delaware parents House Bill 50 Veto Message.

Parents, you know what we need to do.  Legislators, you know what you need to do.  Pat Heffernan with the State Board of Education just said “It’s a good thing.”  More wisdom from the unelected State Board…

Now all of them are chiming in.  President Dr. Teri Quinn Gray knows this bill has been contentious, but this test is needed for our 135,000 students.  She said as a parent, she understands.  However, her child is not in school anymore.

  1. This really makes me mad. He seriously says that the top priority is to provide all students with a world class education? That is crap because we all know that ALL students are not getting one. Also the fact that the schools would lose funding that helps minorities, low income, and disabled students…what a threat..my family involves all three of these and NOBODY is helping my kids at school. I’m still paying 200.00 per child for just school supplies every year and trying to fill them up on PB&J. For those of you who know me, my disabled son is definitely not reaping any benefits. The testing doesn’t even reflect competency of students at all. Some schools even “practice” for the testing week with similar tests being administered. This veto was simply a dig at the parents/supporters who have been pushing this bill so hard. Get teachers who actually want to be teachers. Monitor your schools, make sure they are doing what they are actually supposed to be doing with the funding that they do get and not squandering it away on personal property. AND actually CARE about minorities, low income, and disabled students. We are people too and aren’t morons that you can just push around trying to keep us complacent with your lies. Shame on you Governor Markell! This might be a bump in the road but I can guarantee this fight isn’t over.
