Word around the town is Delaware Senators Greg Lavelle and David Sokola exchanged words at that New Castle school district meeting yesterday. It’s beginning to look like the WEAC recommendations have ruffled a lot of feathers lately. And the power struggles begin anew in the 148th General Assembly. My little birds are also telling me about another power grab occurring in our state between two sides. One team is feeding right into the hands of the other team who are just sitting back and watching it happen.
Meanwhile, our Common Core Smarter Balanced loving Governor was very angry about the RCEA and CEA press conference on Thursday night. Education has been his baby and someone snatched that baby. Even though he stole the baby from its original owners, he didn’t like the snatch back. This is after an already bad week for Jack when he was forced to use the words “opt out”. As well, he had to hear all the talk about his latest whipping boy and his very stupid comments about parents and students.
We have a lame-duck trying to quack, but nobody is liking the noise. The cracks in the foundation are getting bigger and bigger, and it is all about to crumble. Just go to Delawareonline’s Facebook page and look at the recent comments concerning education. Aside from the Delaware DOE employee and a couple other strays (like one person who was in charge of a human capital project), most of the commenters are well aware of what is going on.

I just heard they had words in regards to WEAC. I imagine some down at Legislative Hall are very much in the loop while others are not.

Nancy: Dave Sokola’s actions (Pro-Common Core and Smarter Balanced) in the General Assembly (SB 51) (HB334) have greatly impacted the Lavelle household in the negative. (They have exceptional children..)…

Was there any mention in the report of how charters take money away from all students in existing public schools?
Didn’t think so. Any real policy must solve that first, (which incidentally is fixed if we agree to fund charters with a line item in state budgets and let property tax dollars stay with the districts in line with the feeder pattern to that property.
This is not…. a real policy. Furthermore, look at the underlying politics. Which two districts fight back hardest against Charters? Colonial and Christina. Oh, my, goodness. They are no longer part of Wilmington’s educational future…. (Am I the only one seeing this?)

Of course not, I saw it the second I read the recommendations. And here is the big question. If all the Wilmington schools go to Red Clay, does that include the charters in Wilmington that aren’t already part of Red Clay? And would that make Red Clay responsible for monitoring those schools when they have already done a very poor job at making sure the three charters they do have are transparent? And would that make Red Clay the sole authorizer for new charters in Wilmington? You would need a pretty big organization to handle all that! You know where I’m going with that Kavips.
