Save The Date: Tomorrow, Friday 2/27, 1:00PM, WDEL, 1150AM, Rick Jensen, Me, Parent Opt Out Round Two

Rick Jensen with WDEL/1150AM has graciously invited me back to his radio show tomorrow to discuss parent opt out in Delaware.  We will be discussing more of the nitty-gritty on what parents can do and the process on how to go about doing it.  I will certainly put a podcast up if it becomes available.  If you have any questions you want answered, I will do my best to find the answers between now and then.

The  phone number for WDEL is 302-478-9335.  If State Rep. Jaques wants to call to explain his public comment about the Parent Opt Out Bill never passing, and let listeners know why he is against this bill, I would gladly welcome it.

I am a proud parent of a son with Tourette's Syndrome and several other co-morbidities. I write on this blog to educate other parents so they know a bit more about not only special education, but all the really bad things that are happening with public schools in Delaware and the USA. We are all in this together, and if our children aren't able to advocate for themselves it's up to us parents! We need to stop letting companies run our schools, and demand our children get a proper education. Our Departments of Education in our states have become weak with fear from the bullying US DOE, and we need to take back our schools!

  1. You may be interested to hear what happened to me this week. On Tuesday, I turned in my child’s opt out letter to his school principal. The following day I received from the school, via email, a letter from Dr. Freeman Williams stating that opting your child out was against federal and state statutes, therefore parents cannot opt out and children must take the test.

I forwarded the letter to one of the school board members that I am familiar with, who then contacted Dr. Williams. According to my source, Dr. Williams did not write that letter (his signature is not on it). It is the belief of CSD that the letter was created by DOE and distributed to all CSD principals.

Yesterday I received another email from my child’s school saying there had been a clarification from the district that parents can indeed opt their children out of the Smarter Balanced Assessment. All opt out letters and/or questions should be directed to the office of Dr. Fara Zimmerman at the Drew office.

I recommend writing your letters to the principal of your school and sending a copy of it to Dr. Zimmerman as well as the president of the school board, Mr. Fred Polaski.

  2. Kevin-
I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for all your work on this issue. I just hope enough parents have the courage and good sense to opt their children out of this harmful test. I am hopeful that your hard work and dedication will ensure that all our kids will be spared and MAYBE one day soon our schools can get back to actually teaching our kids what’s important- not how to take a test. So again- THANK YOU!!!
